ATLANTA – Despite a big scare in its season opener that required a double-overtime triumph, defending Division II champion Dayton remains on the top spot in the first regular season edition of the Under Armour MCLA Coaches Poll, which was released Wednesday. The Flyers, who were nearly upended by Lawrence Tech on Saturday, took 18 of the 26 first place votes.

Concordia-Irvine remains in second place, although the Eagles picked up five extra first place votes from the preseason poll, moving them to within 14 points of Dayton. The spread was double that previously.
The UMLC cabal of St. Thomas, North Dakota State and St. John’s rounds out the Top 5, followed closely by Grand Valley State. Western Washington took a hit for their interdivisional loss to Simon Fraser, dropping back to No. 8 this week.
Metro State and Portland dropped out of the poll in Week 1, clearing the way for No. 23 Lawrence Tech and No. 25 UC Davis to join the party.
